Look, this is no joke because when the dust settles you do have a valid question. While many believe that Facebook is just a passing fad, the millions of users who log in every day to chat and communicate with friends and family would say otherwise.

And even though MySpace has been online longer than Facebook, both social networking tools offer the incredible opportunity for users to define who they really are through the richness and power of the Internet.

However, before we go one step further, understand that all users must be diligent about their rights to privacy in the fast paced world of the online networking.

Picture this : More than 50% of the student populations have Facebook accounts, and the vast majority of them log into their accounts more than one time a day!

In fact, Facebook beats out traditional email as the most popular form of communication today. No doubt about it Facebook has grown to such magnificent proportions that several people now prefer it to MySpace.

Just for the record, here’s a little background information on Facebook. For starters, it was created and designed by a Harvard undergraduate in 2004.

And within no time at all, Facebook templates offered the opportunity to set up detailed profiles listing contact and personal information from your religious preferences to your sexual orientation.

Upload pictures of yourself, your family and social events if you choose to. Post whatever you like in your profile for all of your “friends” to see and comment on.

But, there’s a trick with Facebook. By setting your privacy settings, you can build a level of protection around your account and only allow those people you’ve chosen as friends to view your profile.

Is Facebook safer than MySpace?

As you may already know, MySpace operates on the same type of platform. It too is a place where you can meet new friends and socialize online by communicating with people in every corner of the world.

But, one of the major differences between Facebook and MySpace is that with Myspace accounts, anyone can contact you. Yes, you read that right.

Oddly enough, updating the privacy setting in your MySpace profile will keep others from seeing your profile. And for most people that defeats the purpose of making new friends.

It offers no concrete way to keep others from emailing you and adding you to their own MySpace friend list.

This can lead to Spam since you could potentially get a large number of people trying to add you to their MySpace friend list and sending you unsolicited email messages. In essence this could more trouble than it’s worth.

Now, when you think about the question, is Facebook safer than MySpace you have to determine how important privacy is to you. Only you can choose what will work best for you, but seriously, the answer is obvious isn’t it?
